Ground Source Heat Pumps
Get
free quote comparison service for ground source heat pumps today! Ground source heat pumps are a brilliant way to
earn money whilst saving the environment.
They are eligible for the
Renewable Heat Incentive, which is a government scheme that means they will pay themselves off over time and you'll earn a
profit. Our quotes
are free and no-obligation, and we can find ground heat pump companies all over the UK.
Ground source heat pumps
save up to 6,400kg of carbon dioxide emissions per year - so you'll be
warm, rich, and smug! The installation takes a week or two, but heat pumps
require no annual servicing, will last for
25 years or more and will save you money from the first day they're installed. They work because the temperature of the earth 7 metres below
our feet is constant year-round, so the heat from this can be collected and concentrated to
provide heating or hot water for your home, which the government will
pay you to do! Get
solar panels here if you're after those.
Renewable Heat Incentive
First Phase This applies to installations from August 2011. The precise amount available
is not yet determined by the government. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (the DECC) has announced
an approximateion of £1,250 per ground source heat pump unit, or £850 per air source heat pump unit.
These are a one-off payment.
Second PhaseThe Renewable Heat Incentive tariff will apply initially only to ground source heat
pumps. Air source heat pumps will continue to be supported by the one-off payment scheme above. The RHI will pay 4.5 pence
per kWh for household-sized systems for a period of 20 years. This means that the average system will pay itself off
over 5 to 10 years depending on the fuel type of the household.
What are Heat Pumps?
Ground source heat pumps heat your home using heat in the ground. They use pipes buried in your garden
to extract heat from the ground. This can then be used to heat your radiators, provide hot water or to
power underfloor heating systems.
A metre or two into the Earth stays at a fairly stable temperature year-round, so ground source heat
pumps can even be used either in the winter, or in the summer. A pump circulates fluid through pipes
buried in your garden, which absorbs heat from the earth. When this fluid returns in a pipe to the surface,
it is passed through a heat exchange. Low-grade heat goes through a compressor so it can be concentrated into
a higher temperature so the heat is useful for heating water to provide central heating or hot water.
The fluid, now cooled down, then flows back through the underground pipe system, heating up again and therefore
continuing this cycle.
What about Air Source Heat Pumps?
These work in a similar way to heat pumps, but do not involve any pipes under the ground. An air source
heat pump extracts heat from the air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from it's inside. Air source heat
pumps can extract heat from outside even if the temperature is as low as -15 degrees Celsius, although they obviously are
much more efficient during the summer months when it's warmest. The advantage of these pumps is that they are much
cheaper and easier to install that ground source heat pumps, although they aren't eligible for the RHI at the moment.
Heat Pump Prices
Heat pump prices typically start from about £9,000 up to about £17,000.
This is to get the system totally set up and installed. A few factors will affect the price:
The size of your home
The state of your home's insulation
The layour of your garden
As well as payments from the Renewable heat Incentive, you can make savings on your bills by installing
a heat pump. These depend on:
Your current central heating system
Fuel costs
Relative efficiencies of current and previous system
Hot water provision
Temperature setting using the controls

you could earn back from it, and then how much carbon dioxide your system would save.
